Well, we have 1 of 3 shipments received! - which is more than most of our friends at this point. We are very very happy to be sleeping on a real bed instead of an airmattress. We had our first real meal on our dinning room table - fajitas, yum! The place is still a mess... lots of stuff strewn about, with no real place determined yet, pictured piled nicely against the wall, awaiting placement, boxes of clothing without a home yet... Slowly but surely things are coming together though, I found the kitchen counter today, so that was nice.

Also today, Dave and I drove out to Sequoia National Park - where we met General Sherman - the largest living tree in the whole world. There were feet of snow on the ground as we passed 6,000ft in elevation, and it began to rain just as we left the park gate. It was a good trip, and we are really really looking forward to exploring more there and camping with the Boo-san.

Well, we've 95% completed the painting... at least what we're painting for now. The Dining Room and kitchen are Quaking Grass green, and the Living Room is Cloudy Day blue, which doesn't have as much gray in it as I would have liked....Oh well. I'm brainstorming ways to get around painting our bedroom but still adding color to it... I'm thinking of Ikea's color panels, one on each side of the bed.... but we'll see what happens.

Exciting news: our household goods (HHG) come tomorrow!! (Grammarian side note: If I'd said "Our HHG comes tomorrow" instead of "Our Household goods come tomorrow"... See how the verb changes because HHG is singluar and goods is plural? I know, I'm a doooork...) That means no more sleeping on an air mattress! HORRAY! Unfortunately, we still haven't recieved our express shipment... Bad. It has silverware, the vaccum cleaner, and the coffee maker in it.... Supposedly, "they" - Personal Property Office - are unloading a truck today that has 50 people's express shipments on there. Hopefully, ours!

HHG= all furniture, bed, couch, remaining pots and pans, pictures, generally everything.
Express Shipment, or UB, Unaccompanied Baggage= things that will arrive within three weeks, so pack what you'll use only - no furniture, so it includes some pots and pans, the toaster, the coffeemaker, bedding, a few lamps, but nothing large.

about time~

We finally got our HPC (home port change) letter, and now things appear to be moving smoothly forward. The letter came out on Monday, and on tuesday I scheduled the movers to arrive on monday, dec 7. I've faxed in information to begin my Honda's voyage from storage in South Carolina to Richmond CA. I'll be reactivating my state-side cellphone next week. All this and Dave and I attended the squadron Christmas party on Tuesday night! busy busy times...It will be hard to leave the life we've made in Japan, the friends, the experiences, the Japanese in general. But I've been waiting for months to move forward, and now I am! Lots to do.

I will probably fly to Lemoore on the 13th or 14th of December, quickly sign a lease on a house, camp out at Cam and Lauren's. Dave will arrive on the 18th or 19th. Then we have Christmas leave! On the 22nd we are flying to DC, where we will spend Christmas! On the 26th, we plan to purchase a new-to-us car: 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. I want the dealer to put a big bow on top, as it's our christmas gift to each other. On the 27th we'll hit the road, with all the animals in tow, and stop for the night in Nashville, visiting Dave's sister Sarah. Then on the 28th we will arrive in Olive Branch until Jan. 1st or 2nd. Then we'll pack up our family and head west: Lemoore or Bust! We plan on stopping by the Grand Canyon! If you have any places you think we should visit on our road trip, please let me know!

This of course is the PLAN. We'll see what actually happens.

Just a list

A list of random things:
1. I almost died today driving Dave to work because someone came speeding around a blind corner on a sharp hill. And with pedestrians on either side the road is even more narrow. We all slammed our brakes and there was much "gomenasai" - "I'm sorry" or "I'm sorry, here's some money, don't be upset with me." Unfortunately, no money was involved, only across-the-street-bowing-while-in-the-car.

2. I discovered the "Fish Store" - so named for the Swordfish on the front, as it's Japanese name is not known to us "gaijin" - foreigners - does not accept cards - only cash. So i was forced to count out all my change... at least I had enough!

3. The chances are, if you need something on base, that location will be closed for an undisclosed reason/no reason. Hence why it's been a week and we still have no TV.

4 It will be very hard to go back to the states after being here for only 8 months! When we were setting up our internet: a) the English speaker called me at 8pm on a Thursday and b) was generally sorry to have to charge a cancellation fee if necessary. Genuinely sorry! For a $36 fee! In the states it would be $75-$100 and they would openly hope you'd be charged it...

5. I have learned the Zama Zag well enough to veer off it's narrow path, in an attempt to find alternate routes.

6. The girl who works at the front desk of the Navy Lodge was so excited to see me today. It made me feel very special. She asked for my phone number - awe :)

7. I really miss Sliderboo-san. He would have scared everyone here, but he always means well...

8. I CANNOT WAIT TO HAVE MY OWN COUCH AGAIN! This stick furniture sucks hardcore.

9. NPR Podcasts have saved my sanity. I have subscribed to Talk of the Nation, The Diane Rehms Show, Car Talk, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. And the 5minute news of the day (the one that's played at the top of every hour). The only bummer is that Morning Edition and All Things Considered don't have podcasts - boo. But I realized last night that I can listen to Morning Edition while I cook dinner! Which is kind of like listening to All Things Considered while cooking, like i did in VA.

le sigh. How i love NPR. (Dave will laugh at me for this...)
