Hearst Castle was built in the 1920s-1930s by a man who sought to create Europe in rural California. This "house" was actually lived in and used. The amount and type of antiquities Hearst used to furnish his house is baffling.

For a nice cultural tie, view the classic movie Citizen Kane staring Orson Welles (he also directed) that is based in part on the life of William Randolph Hearst (or check out Patti Hearst's life story, grand-daughter of WR Hearst)....the place has a fascinating place in American's story. Were both mentioned on your tour? Would think so.... Hearst Castle...quite a monument to....? Thanks for posting the pics!!!
